Regained Mobility

Since 2021, Mr Viraj (not his real name) has suffered from lower limb weakness caused by a spinal cord injury, forcing him to depend on a walking frame for mobility. “I went back to my hometown of India and spent a lot of money on various treatments, like massages, but nothing helped,” he shared. Upon his return to Singapore in November 2021, he underwent one month of physiotherapy and rehabilitation at a community hospital.

Steps towards Recovery

However, Mr Viraj’s condition did not improve, until he came to MWS Christalite Methodist Home (CMH) in October 2022. At that time, the adaptive sports programme was being rolled out to combat inactivity and isolation among the residents as well as enhance their well-being amid COVID-19 lockdowns.

Under the guidance of MWS’ Allied Health team, Mr Viraj participated in a range of adaptive sports alongside other exercise and therapy programmes, which strengthened his leg muscles and improved his balance.

After nine months, the 67-year-old progressed to using a quad-stick.

Holistic Wellness, Thriving Life

In addition to better mobility, Mr Viraj values the social and emotional benefits of adaptive sports. “It allows me to connect with fellow residents in the Home, and I feel a great sense of happiness and pride when I score a goal,” he said.

Mr Viraj remains committed to staying active and ageing well physically.

Another motivation for him to stay active is tokens, which are used to encourage residents to engage in regular physical activity and reach their goals.

“It inspires me to compete and earn extra tokens in games, which I can trade for snacks and drinks,” he said.
