For Years, His Possessions Took Over His Home

For years, Lim Kim Yam, 85, lived alone in a flat overflowing with newspapers, old gadgets, appliances, and other belongings, with barely enough room to move.

“I’ve been living here for 48 years,” he shared. “When my mother was around, she kept everything spick and span. After she passed away, I didn’t tidy up, so things just gradually accumulated.” The clutter worried his neighbours, Mr and Mrs Chan, who lived next door. “We were always afraid of a fire,” Mr Chan recalled. “But we didn’t say anything for fear of offending him.”

Everything changed when Kim Yam fell seriously ill.

Moved by Neighbourly Compassion

After a hospital stay, Kim Yam was transferred to a nursing home because his flat was deemed unlivable. Knowing he had no support network, the Chans visited him regularly. “We learnt that Kim Yam really wanted to return home, and he asked us to help clear his flat so he could do so,”
Mr Chan recalled.

At first, the couple tried clearing the flat themselves. But when the task proved too physically demanding, they reached out for help. Over the course of two months in late 2025, MWS Wesley Active Ageing Centre (AAC) – Jalan Berseh coordinated with Jalan Besar Town Council, volunteers from Covenant Evangelical Free Church, and the Chans to restore Kim Yam’s home. “It took seven volunteers over three hours, 10 industrial-sized bins, and countless trips to the bin centre to clear and clean the flat,” said Hsu Hsia Yang, an MWS Wesley AAC staff member.

MWS Wesley AAC also coordinated referrals for the installation of grab bars in Mr Lim’s flat and for the Home Caregiving Grant, enabling Kim Yam to engage a helper. Meanwhile, Mr Chan sourced a reliable contractor. Soon after, Kim Yam was finally able to return home.

A Home Restored

Today, Kim Yam’s flat is bright and welcoming. “I’m happy that my house is clean and spacious now,” Kim Yam said with a smile. Asked how he felt about those who had helped him, his answer was simple: “Grateful.”

Since returning home, Kim Yam has become more socially connected through MWS Wesley AAC. He now joins outings, learnt to play the angklung through an Esplanade community programme, and has even performed for fellow seniors.

For the Chans, helping Kim Yam was simply the right thing to do. “If I can help someone, as long as I’m able, I’ll help,” said Mrs Chan. What began with a cluttered flat became a testament to what is possible when neighbours, volunteers, and community partners come together. Their collective effort helped Kim Yam return to “somewhere I can call home”.
