It Takes a Village: From Neighbourhood Programmes to Nationwide Games Supporting our Seniors

With more seniors living longer and often alone, social isolation has become a growing concern. Building a caring community where they can stay active, engaged, and connected is key to helping them age well and meaningfully – and it truly takes a village to make that happen.

Recognising this, seniors have been invited to take an active role as co-creators of Ling Ling Time, one of the signature programmes at MWS Active Ageing Centres (AACs). Inspired by the Chinese phrase “lin li le ling” (“seniors in the neighbourhood”), the initiative promotes active ageing, strengthens community ties, and empowers seniors with a sense of ownership in shaping a more connected neighbourhood.

In conjunction with the Mid-Autumn Festival, MWS AAC – Fernvale Rivergrove held a Ling Ling Time Block Party, where seniors enjoyed carnival games, a communal meal, and a mooncake-making workshop. Partner organisations, namely, Sengkang General Hospital, the Silver Generation Office, and the National Kidney Foundation – also set up booths to bring health screenings and resources right to where seniors live.

Deepavali offered another meaningful opportunity for seniors to gather. At MWS AAC – Golden Lily@Pasir Ris, they enjoyed a morning of exercise, song and dance, and hearty Indian cuisine, accompanied by a live performance from a seniors-led jam band from Changi Bethany Church.

One of the participants, 78-year-old Ong Ai Ping, shared, “Ling Ling Time helped me get to know my neighbours better. It’s a very meaningful programme that prevents seniors from becoming isolated, as we’ve started looking out for one another after joining it.”

Beyond MWS-led activities, seniors from MWS AAC – Kebun Baru also took part in the 15M Health Games, a nationwide initiative by the National Healthcare Group that aims to add 15 million years of healthy life through group-based adaptive sports.

We’re proud of the MWS team for clinching a silver medal in Tic-Tac Floorball – a modified, low-impact version of the sport!

Here’s to healthy ageing and many more fulfilling years ahead!
